Dr. Pernessa Seele,
Founder CEO of Balm in Gilead
“My vision is to see our people to be healthy, thriving, and having our families whole and communities free of chronic disease and health disparities. I believe the path to seeing this vision come to pass is by helping communities understand the role our cultural heritage plays in how we approach food and nutrition and by committing to making lifelong lifestyle changes to create a paradigm shift in the African-American communities.”
Active Members: Balm Representatives in more than 5,000 congregations across the country reaching more than 8 million African-Americans.
The Balm In Gilead is proud to be partnering with the American Heart Association’s Empowered To Serve Initiative. Through the Empowered To Serve initiative, which combines the strengths of individuals and community organizations to establish and sustain environments that promote and improve our overall quality of life, The Balm In Gilead calls for faith leaders and congregations across the nation to utilize this Healthy Community Food and Beverage Toolkit as a guide to dialogue and take action around healthier eating in our churches and communities. This guide will provide leaders and community members with a framework on how to create a culture of healthy eating within your congregations through increasing awareness, education, and behavior change.
