Get Your Grill On

Get your charcoal ready — barbecue season has officially begun! Remember, barbecue can be healthy, so before you take out that spatula and tie on your apron, take a look at these heart-healthy tips.

Grilled Chicken

Buy chicken breasts (instead of the fattier dark meat like legs and thighs) and remove the skin before eating.

Burgers

Try skipping the red meat and go for a lean ground chicken or turkey burgers. You can add diced onions and low-sodium spices to pump up the flavor.

Fish

Burgers and chicken are popular grilling choices, but don’t forget about fish. The healthiest types include salmon, trout and herring, which are high in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Veggies

Vegetables are great on the grill and will get a natural flavor from the flames. Make sure you don’t cut the veggies too small so they won’t fall through the rack.

Fruit

Try grilling pineapple slices, nectarines, peaches or plums. The natural sugars caramelize with the heat and create a great flavor. Fruits are loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber — and they’re low in calories.
