With a busy family it may seem like everyone is always running around, but are they getting enough exercise? Adults need about 30 minutes of exercise a day, while kids need even more — about 60 minutes of exercise or active playing a day.
Exercising as a family is a great way to keep everyone involved and on track with their health. Spending time with your kids will help them see the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips to help your family grow stronger while having fun:
Take family walks.
Walking together as a family before or after dinner brings everyone together. It’s a great low-impact exercise almost anyone can do. If you have pets, it’s also a great way to teach your kids the importance of taking care of them. For more resources and exercise information, visit heart.org.
Dancing with your family.
Have your kids choose their favorite songs and create a playlist. Dance in the morning, afternoon or night. You’ll get your hearts pumping and create memories.
Play at the park.
Bring your kids to a local park and run, jump, try the monkey bars and go down the slides. When they see you having a good time, they’ll want to keep coming back.
Get creative with inactive kids.
Some kids love watching TV or playing video games. During commercial breaks, mute the TV and do a quick workout routine and try push-ups, sit-ups and jumping jacks. For video game lovers, find games that incorporate exercise like running, dancing and jumping. And don’t be afraid to tell them to turn off the TV!
Sign up for a local family race.
Look up events in your community to benefit your favorite charity and introduce your children to the importance of exercise and supporting others. For more resources and exercise information, visit heart.org.
