AHA Legal Position

American Heart Association copyright materials may not be reproduced in whole or in part by persons, organizations or corporations other than the AHA, its affiliates, divisions and units without the prior written permission of the Legal Department at the AHA National Center.

To obtain permission to copy or translate AHA copyrighted material, the following steps must be taken:

  1. All requests must be submitted in writing. Requests may be submitted by fax to 214-373-9818, via US mail to Copyright Permissions Specialist, 7272 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75231-4596 or by e-mail to [email protected]. Requests should include the requestor’s name, address and telephone number.
  2. Requests must identify the exact material that is being requested to be copied or translated and the title of the publication, video or the Web site URL address from which the material is taken. Page numbers and copyright dates must be included.
  3. The request must state exactly how the material will be used and distributed and if the materials will be sold.
  4. All requests that are granted will be assessed a $25 processing fee. Additional charges will be assessed for requests to reprint algorithms or tables from Emergency Cardiovascular Care 2000 products.
  5. Allow 10 business days for requests to be processed.

Permission will be granted to copy AHA material if the request meets these criteria with the exception of Emergency Cardiovascular Care material:

  • The requested material does not exceed 10 percent of text or video footage, or 25 percent of charts and illustrations (This rule does not apply to ECC materials , consumer publications, or cookbooks).
  • Material is being reproduced for educational purposes.
  • Material will not be used for a commercial or for-profit activity.
  • The AHA copyright statement must be included on the reproduction.

Permission will be granted to translate AHA material if the request meets these criteria:

  • Translated materials are not to be sold or used in a commercial venture (excluding recipes).
  • The AHA copyright statement must be included on the translation.
  • A bilingual medical doctor acting as responsible person for the science content of the translation provides a certification letter to the AHA.
  • Translation for Emergency Cardiovascular Care products must receive ECC approval.

Permission will not be granted:

  • To use any AHA Service Marks.
  • To copy an entire publication, pamphlet, slide set or video.
  • To use any material that has been discontinued or that is under revision.
  • To duplicate material from the AHA Web site to another site.
  • To translate any recipes.
  • To translate material into variations of the English language such as Europeanize.
  • To translate more than two translations per material per language.
  • To translate ECC products without ECC approval.
  • To use ECC algorithms in electronic format.
  • To translate for a commercial or for-profit activity. (Permission to publish, license or reproduce all or substantially all of an AHA copyrighted work will not be granted by the Legal Department through the copyright process but instead will be referred to the Corporate Relations)
  • To use recipes or other consumer publications material in an electronic format.
  • To use ECC illustrations from the 2000 product line.
  • To copy more than 12 recipes per request.
  • To copy any photographs from cookbooks or other consumer publications.
