Overview of Scholarship

MLK National Day of Service is recognized each year on the third Monday of January; this day is reserved for the observance of humanitarian and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. EmPOWERED To Serve™ will honor this day by awarding a total of five $1,500 scholarships based on the work of students who are actively seeking to improve the health of their communities by addressing the social determinants of health. This activation lives within American Heart Association’s Take Me Home campaign, which is designed to leverage the collective stories of our ambassadors, alliances and communities as catalysts to rally, inspire and spring board improved health outcomes.

Applicants must be residents of the United States, 18 years or older and currently either a high school senior or a full time undergrad college student during the Spring 2018 semester working to improve the health of the area in which they live or their college campus by addressing:

  • Food deserts and/or food insecurity
  • Access to education
  • Pharmacy deserts
  • Transportation
  • Other relevant aspects of improving heart, stroke, diabetes and/or overall health outcomes

Students can also be nominated by other parties, including, but not limited to, educators, supervisors, mentors and pastors.

Applicants who are or have members of their extended family that are employed by American Heart Association shall not be eligible to win.
