Overview of Scholarship

MLK National Day of Service is recognized each year on the third Monday of January; this day is reserved for the observance of humanitarian and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. EmPOWERED To Serve™ will honor this day by awarding a total of five $1,500 scholarships based on the work of students who are actively seeking to improve the health of their communities by addressing the social determinants of health. This activation lives within American Heart Association’s Take Me Home campaign, which is designed to leverage the collective stories of our ambassadors, alliances and communities as catalysts to rally, inspire and spring board improved health outcomes.
