Who is eligible to apply?

Current college freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are improving community health and wellness through efforts such as advocating for access to healthy food, volunteering at a local health clinic or organization, working in student health, fundraising for a cause, and more.

Is there a GPA requirement?

No, there is no requirement. However, a 3.0 GPA or higher is preferred.

What types of majors are eligible?

We accept applicants of any major. Past scholars and applicants have been majors in public health, exercise physiology, dietetics, biology, chemistry, sociology, public affairs, political science and pre-med.

Are graduate students eligible?

Currently, the scholarship opportunity is only open to undergraduate students.

I’m a high school senior starting college next year. Am I eligible to apply?

The scholarship opportunity is only open to current undergraduate students. You may apply in a future cycle once you are in college.

Is the scholarship opportunity only for U.S. citizens/Permanent Residents?

No, we welcome all students currently enrolled in a U.S. college/university, including DACA and undocumented students.

What are the benefits of becoming a Scholar?

In addition to receiving a $10K college scholarship, Scholars become part of the EmPOWERED to Serve network of Ambassadors and alumni. Scholars are connected to their regional AHA office for opportunities to represent the program locally. Scholars also receive invitations to special events, such as the EmPOWERED to Serve Business Accelerator finale.

If I am not selected, are there other opportunities to be involved with the American Heart Association?

Yes! We welcome you to become an EmPOWERED to Serve Ambassador. Our Ambassadors are helping the American Heart Association lead the way through community-centered and culturally relevant solutions. If you are an activist, community leader, health care professional, young professional or social entrepreneur, we invite you to become an EmPOWERED to Serve Ambassador. Together, we can make a significant impact and create change for the long term.

I applied for the scholarship. When will I hear back?

For the 2020 application cycle, all applicants will receive notification in March 2020.
